It's a mistake to think that Schizosaccharomyces pombe yeast are slow.
At normal temperatures, yes - they are slower than s.cerevisiae.
But they have a thermostable alcohol dehydrogenase, and at temperatures of 40...42°C, they show a fermentation speed that ordinary yeast just can't match.
Cells don't reproduce well at such high temperatures, but if the culture has already grown, the fermentation rate is very impressive.
