Rum Brand Reference - Who Makes and Owns the Brands

What follows is a list of hundreds of well-known rum brands currently in production. The primary focus is those big enough to be exported from their home countries, although there are examples to the contrary. Defunct brands and small brands with only local distribution aren’t the focus. If you feel strongly that a brand is missing, let me know.

Essential Notes

  • Brands appear in alphabetical order. However, for consistency, Ron and Rhum prefixes are omitted. Thus, Rhum J.M appears as J.M, and Ron Pepon appears as Pepon.

  • Try your browser’s page search function if you don’t find a brand where you’d expect it.

  • In a few cases, a brand name is used by two different companies in different regions, e.g., Havana Club. In such cases, there are separate entries for each.

  • If a producer makes several different brands, each brand appears separately. However, only the flagship brand has the full explanatory text. For example, the flagship brand of St. Lucia Distillers is Chairman’s Reserve, and that entry contains the explanatory text for all the company’s brands. The Admiral Rodney and Bounty entries will state: “See Chairman’s Reserve.”

Interpreting the Data

After each brand name is additional information in parenthesis:

  • Style of the brand, e.g., Original Producer, Private Label, etc. (See below.)

  • The country/region where the rum is believed to be primarily produced.

  • The nationality of the brand’s top-level owner.

For non-distilling producers, the production region is where aging and blending occur. If the brand is blended from multiple producers, the region stated is where blending occurs, e.g., the Netherlands.

Following the initial line is a short description with additional details about the brand, including who owns the brand and who produces the rum.

Brand Types

  • Original Producer – The company that makes the rum also owns the brand. For instance, Remy Cointreau owns both the Mount Gay distillery and the Mount Gay brand.

  • Non-Distilling Producer – The brand purchases unaged distillate and ages it. These brands are particularly prevalent in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean basin.

  • Private Label – These brands purchase finished rum from a distillery or broker/blender such as E&A Scheer. Most private label brands do not disclose who produced the rum.

  • Independent Bottler – These brands typically have a collection of limited-edition releases. For example, a single-cask Demerara rum distilled in 1998 and bottled at cask strength. Such rums are usually not available from the original distillery. Independent bottlers often purchase casks from brokers like Liverpool’s The Main Rum Company.

  • Polymorph – A brand that straddles two or more of the above category types, e.g., Plantation and Velier.
